Imagine a group of university students guided by Scuba Dogs’ highly trained, certified PADI Instructors. The results were extraordinary: Nearly everyone, 21 out of 22 students, completed their training—an impressive achievement compared to previous years, where success rates were much lower.
For the past decade, Simpson College has sought out the world’s top scuba diving destinations to provide its students with unparalleled marine biology field experiences. Belize, Cozumel, and other famous marine hotspots have been the usual choices—until now. This year, Puerto Rico emerged as the destination of choice, thanks to the vision and expertise of Scuba Dogs, a local leader in scuba instruction and marine adventure.
The Perfect Classroom Underwater
Puerto Rico, often overlooked in favor of more globally recognized diving destinations like the Galápagos, the Great Barrier Reef, or the Bahamas, is a hidden gem teeming with marine biodiversity and accessible adventure. Simpson College’s decision to bring 25 students and three professors to the island marked a historic shift—and a resounding success.
The advantages of Puerto Rico as a marine biology and scuba training destination are manifold. First, the island offers a unique blend of stable governance, ease of travel (being a U.S. territory), a shared currency, and the comfort of familiar infrastructure—all of which remove logistical headaches for academic groups. But the real magic lies beneath the waves.
A Comprehensive Training Experience
The journey began at the Scuba Dogs facility in Guaynabo, where a dedicated, heated, 12-foot-deep pool served as the perfect training ground for 22 non-divers. Here, students tackled over 30 essential scuba skills in a controlled, safe environment, guided by Scuba Dogs’ highly trained, certified instructors and dive masters. The results were extraordinary: 21 out of 22 students completed their training—an impressive achievement compared to previous years, where success rates were much lower.
Next, the group moved to the Escambrón Marine Park in San Juan to complete their open water dives. Over two consecutive days, all four required open water dives were completed under the watchful eyes of Scuba Dogs’ professionals. Again, 21 students achieved full certification—a testament to the quality of instruction and the suitability of Puerto Rico’s waters for training.
Exploring Puerto Rico’s Marine Wonders
With certifications in hand, the group ventured to the southwest coast, diving from boats off Guanica and La Parguera, exploring vibrant reefs and participating in coral restoration projects with local partners. These hands-on experiences allowed students to connect directly with marine conservation efforts—an invaluable addition to their academic curriculum.
The adventure continued with shore dives on the north and west coasts, including Crash Boat Beach in Aguadilla and El Natural, where students encountered a stunning array of marine life: turtles, stingrays, moray eels, yellowtail snappers, blue tangs, and squid. Visibility exceeded 80 feet, and wave conditions were ideal—a rare and fortunate alignment that showcased Puerto Rico at its best.
Beyond Diving: A Rich Island Experience
The Simpson College group didn’t just dive. They immersed themselves in Puerto Rico’s culture and natural beauty. Visits to the historic forts of Old San Juan, kayak tours in bioluminescent bays, hikes through the El Yunque rainforest, and even “Salsa” dance lessons offered a well-rounded educational experience. These activities, combined with community engagement and conservation projects, made the trip unforgettable and set a new standard for academic travel.
Why Scuba Dogs Stands Out
Scuba Dogs distinguished itself as a premier solution provider by delivering more than just scuba certification. Their team of highly trained, certified instructors and dive masters ensured safety, comfort, and success at every stage. The facilities and equipment were top-notch, and the personalized approach to training and adventure set a new benchmark for academic scuba programs.
Positioning Puerto Rico for the Future
This trip proved that Puerto Rico can compete with—and even surpass—the world’s most famous diving destinations. The island’s combination of accessible marine environments, cultural richness, and logistical advantages make it an ideal choice for academic groups seeking comprehensive marine biology and scuba training experiences.
As Simpson College’s students returned home, they carried with them not only new certifications but also memories of a transformative journey. Scuba Dogs and Puerto Rico are now firmly on the map as premier destinations for marine biology curriculum and scuba diving training—ready to welcome more academic groups seeking adventure, education, and inspiration beneath the waves.
